do you ever get so mad that you need to sing about it and pound your fists on a golf course

Always the same, no matter which John and Sherlock we’re looking at. :*)

I just want to add something that shouldn’t need saying but apparently does because most people aren’t capable of nuanced thought, apparently.
Just because I point out things that I don’t enjoy about what some writers’ do does not mean that
- everything a writer does offends me
- everything a writer does is bad
- I hate that writer personally
- I hate that writer’s work
- I hate the show
- I should stop watching the show
- I am not a good fan
- I go looking for things that offend me
If I wanted to make my blog a fapfest for Moffat or RTD or whoever, I would. Luckily for my peace of mind, I have integrity and I have thoughts like, “wow, white men control most of the media we experience,” and, “isn’t that a bit fucked up?”
Sorry that I am not simple-minded enough for some fans’ tastes. Unfollow if you’d like. Because I happen to think that my opinions are fairly simple:
- men cannot reclaim sexist things for women (just as whites cannot reclaim racist things for other ethnic groups)
- saying things like “[the main female character on the show] is having an emotion! Quick, get her husband!” is not funny or okay
- ignoring problem rhetoric for enjoyment’s sake is enabling ignorance to spread
- ignorance is a normal part of the human condition, but one that can and show be corrected through education and time
Amen to that.
However it isn’t your opinions and your posts about what you don’t like that are outrageously offensive. It is your lack of understanding that people are ALSO entitled to these opinions. If you want to educate people that do post things that you think are wrong, I’m sure there is a much better way of doing it than making your points, and then turning around and calling them ignorant. Can you imagine if that’s how our teachers taught us back in school?
“Does anyone know what Shakespeare meant when he said ‘That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet?’”“Yeah, I think it means things other than roses are sweet.”
“Now Johnny, don’t be so ignorant! It means no matter what we called a rose, it would still just be a wonderful smelling flower.”
That is essentially what I see when I read your posts trying to “educate” people who see things differently than you. Even if you are right, there is no need to be as harsh and rude as you sometimes are. The way you expressed your thoughts on sexism in Doctor Who tonight to that one particular blogger was akin to bullying. When you start making someone uncomfortable about posting their opinion on their own damn blog, maybe it is time to take a step back and keep your opinions on your own blog, if you aren’t going to edit them for kindness.
Obviously, if your example was analogous to institutional and systemic sexism, I’d agree with you.
I do come off as harsh sometimes. I agree. But no, opinions that are sexist should not be seen as legitimate. They are flawed. Perhaps that is narrow-minded, but I’m sorry, we wouldn’t as a relatively forward-thinking society accept someone who thought that all black people are inferior to white people (although there are pockets of those sorts of racists—and quite a few of them), so why should we accept sexist points-of-view? Forgive me if that’s harsh, but sometimes being harsh is how to get a reaction out of someone.
And I don’t think I was bullying. But granted, I don’t know how it felt on the receiving end. So maybe I was unfair, I’ll accept that. And I’m sorry.
OPINIONS CAN BE WRONG
OPINIONS CAN BE WRONG
OPINIONS CAN BE WRONG
ENTITLEMENT TO AN OPINION DOES NOT GIVE IT AUTOMATIC VALIDITY
If someone can’t handle being called out for saying a sexist/racist/homophopic/etc statement they shouldn’t have said anything in the first place. Recognizing bullshit is so not bullying. It might be hurtful to hear it put in a certain way, but to call it bullying is just plain ridiculous. I guess anartistandfor doesn’t understand that yeah, people are entitled to their opinion but that doesn’t mean that the opinion is right. If you put your opinion out on a public forum like tumblr, you are opening yourself to others’ opinions about your opinion (which according to your mentality we’re entitled~ to)
Like Cate basically said, if people kept their criticisms of opinions to themselves, PoC would live in an even shittier society, women would not be able to vote, and there would never be any progress.
So when you start making opinions on your own damn blog, maybe you should take a step back and think about what you’re about to show on a publicly accessible website, if you aren’t going to be able to have your bullshit called out.
